Wild Ones’ Native Garden Design program is gaining national attention for its innovative approach to promoting native plant landscaping and was recently featured in a New York Times article by Margaret Roach. The article highlights our Native Garden Design program; you can read it via this gift article link. Since the article’s release on September 11, Wild Ones has over 400 new members across 90 seedlings and chapters. Roach followed this article on September 23 with an interview with Preston Montague on her podcast A Way to Garden. Montague was interviewed in the NYT story and is the designer for the Greensboro, NC Native Garden Design.

The Wild Ones Native Garden Designs Program is an initiative to create free, beautiful, nature friendly, native garden plans in a variety of ecoregions across the United States. The program, which is supported by a grant from the Stanley Smith Horticultural Trust, provides designs for the ecoregions across the United States, including a design for Washington, DC.

The Wild Ones Native Garden Designs incorporate a variety of region-specific native plants that provide intrigue throughout the growing season and allow people to take an incremental approach in implementation, adding new areas and native plant species as time and funds permit. The designs and accompanying plant lists can be conveniently downloaded and printed making it easy to find plants at a local nursery.

The nativegardendesigns.wildones.org website also features a growing list of nationwide nurseries that are great sources for obtaining native plants.

The Washington, DC, native garden design was created by Designer and Speaker Larry Weaner. Larry Weanera Wild Ones Honorary Director, received his Associates degree in Ornamental Horticulture from Pennsylvania College of Technology. He founded Larry Weaner Landscape Associates in 1982 and gained a national reputation for combining ecological restoration with garden design traditions. In 2008 he received the top three design awards from the Association of Professional Landscape Designers, and his work has been profiled in many regional and national publications. An active guest lecturer for horticultural and environmental organizations throughout the U.S, he developed New Directions in the American Landscape, a conference series dedicated to advancing the art and science of natural landscape design.
